A destination wedding means every function is back-to-back and your wardrobe has to fit in a suitcase that also holds shoes, jewellery and a steamer. The goal: five looks, minimum bulk, zero wrinkles. Here is the packing plan by destination.
First, the fabrics that travel well
- Pure crepe – rolls flat, barely creases, looks expensive. The best travel saree fabric.
- Uppada & lightweight silks – fold with tissue paper between layers.
- Modal cotton handloom – for daytime functions and haldi.
- Rayon & cotton kurta sets (men) – fold, don't roll; steam on arrival.
- Avoid: stiff organza, heavy can-can lehengas, and velvet unless it is the reception outfit and you are carrying it separately.
Goa: beach, sun and sunset ceremonies
Light, breezy, sand-friendly. Pastel crepe sarees, aqua and mint Uppada silks, co-ord sets for the pool brunch. Men: light rayon kurta sets in sky blue, olive or peach with white pyjamas; a sea-green Jodhpuri for the reception.
Udaipur: palaces, lakes and royal evenings
Rich but not heavy. Zari-woven silk sarees in mustard, purple or pista; a Banarasi lehenga for the wedding night. Men: a maroon or emerald Jodhpuri for the reception, silk foil-print indo-western for the sangeet, and a cotton kurta set for the mehendi. Carry a shawl – lake-side evenings get cold from November.
Jaipur: colour, heritage and dusty pinks
Lean into Rajasthani colour. Bandhani and tissue sarees with zardosi, peach or beige Banarasi lehengas, mirror-work kurti sets for the mehendi. Men: bright rayon kurta sets (red, teal), a Jodhpuri in its home city is a must, and a printed shirt for the haveli brunch.
The 5-function checklist
| Function | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Mehendi | Mirror-work kurti set / co-ord | Cotton kurta set, light colour |
| Haldi | Yellow or handloom cotton saree | White or yellow kurta |
| Sangeet | Foil-print or sequin saree / lehenga | Silk indo-western |
| Wedding | Banarasi lehenga or zari silk saree | Sherwani or heavy kurta set |
| Reception | Crepe saree with designer blouse | Jodhpuri or suit |
Packing hacks that actually work
- Pack each outfit as a set in one packing cube – blouse, petticoat, jewellery, safety pins together.
- Carry a travel steamer; hotel irons ruin silk.
- Wear your heaviest shoes and bulkiest jacket on the flight.
- Keep the wedding-day outfit in cabin baggage. Always.
- One pair of block heels + one pair of juttis covers all five functions.
- Repeat a blouse across two sarees – nobody notices, and it saves half a cube.
