Every groom, every groom's brother and every wedding guest hits the same question by October: sherwani or indo-western? Both are βethnicβ, both are formal, and they look completely different on the day. Here is how to decide β by function, by body type and by how much you want to stand out.
The one-line difference
A sherwani is the long, structured, knee-length coat worn over a kurta and churidar β royal, traditional, heavy. An indo-western is anything that mixes Indian silhouettes with western tailoring: asymmetric kurtas, draped jackets, bandhgala-style sets with trousers, foil-print sets with a jacket. Lighter, younger, easier to move in.
Choose by function
| Function | Groom | Guest / family |
|---|---|---|
| Mehendi / Haldi | Indo-western (light) | Kurta set |
| Sangeet | Indo-western (foil print, sequins) | Indo-western or kurta + koti |
| Wedding / Baraat | Sherwani | Heavy kurta set or Jodhpuri |
| Reception | Indo-western or suit | Jodhpuri or blazer |
Short version: the sherwani is for the pheras. Everything else is indo-western territory.
Indo-western: when it wins
- You will be dancing β sangeet, cocktail, reception after-party.
- Destination or summer wedding β silk foil-print sets are half the weight of a sherwani.
- You are a guest and don't want to out-dress the groom.
- You want the outfit again β an indo-western works at Diwali, a friend's engagement, a New Year party.
Sherwani: when it wins
- You are the groom and this is the main ceremony β nothing else photographs with the same weight next to a bridal lehenga.
- Traditional family, temple wedding, or the bride is in a heavy Banarasi.
- Winter wedding β the layers are the point.
- You want the full look: safa, kalgi, stole, mojris.
Choose by body type
- Tall & lean: both work; sherwani adds presence, indo-western with a draped jacket adds width.
- Shorter frame: indo-western with a shorter jacket (hip length) and tapered trousers β a knee-length sherwani can shorten you further. If you go sherwani, keep it slim and mid-thigh with minimal horizontal embroidery.
- Broad / heavier build: a sherwani in a dark solid (navy, wine, bottle green) with vertical embroidery is very flattering. Avoid shiny indo-western fabrics that reflect light.
The middle path: Jodhpuri & heavy kurta sets
Can't decide? A Jodhpuri (bandhgala) has the structure of a sherwani and the length of a jacket β it is the reception favourite for grooms who wore a sherwani for the pheras. And a heavy silk kurta set with a stole is the guest's answer for the wedding night.
2026 trends in both camps
- Sherwani: ivory and pastel sherwanis with tone-on-tone threadwork; deep wine and bottle green for winter; shorter, sharper cuts.
- Indo-western: silk foil prints, asymmetric hems, draped shoulder jackets, and colour β pink, golden, sky blue, yellow-red.
Final answer
Groom: sherwani for the wedding, indo-western for the sangeet, Jodhpuri or suit for the reception. Guest: indo-western or kurta + koti for the party nights, a heavy kurta set or Jodhpuri for the ceremony. Nobody needs more than three outfits β they just need the right three.
